Tottenham Hotspur and Ajax have agreed a €30million (£25.8million) deal for Steven Bergwijn, with the player undertaking a medical today, according to The Athletic.
The report claims that the Dutch international has already completed the first part of his assessment, with the second aspect of the medical checks ongoing in Amsterdam ahead of penning a five year deal.
It appears progress has been made after De Telegraaf reported yesterday that Daniel Levy’s involvement in signing off the agreement was holding up proceedings.
The Spurs chief was said to be not content with the structure of the deal which included the percentage of the sell-on clause and the number of installments in which the £25.8million will be paid in.
Levy’s involvement was despite the fact that Fabio Paratici has agreed to the fee with the Eredivisie club which had looked to have added another layer of a delay in sanctioning Bergwijn to return to his homeland.
Bergwijn has made it abundantly clear that he wanted to leave north London this summer in the search of regular game time (Algemeen Dagblad) with Ajax looking to bring in a forward following the sale of Sebastien Haller to Borussia Dortmund.
Tottenham have already moved to bolster their frontline in anticipation of Bergwijn’s departure, having signed Richarlison from Everton.
Our View – Why a sell-on clause is key
Bergwijn, 24 is yet to hit the peak of his career and with Ajax having a reputation for giving players a chance to impress on the European stage, it is clear to see why Daniel Levy was keen to get the right sell-on clause for Tottenham which could be worth millions of pounds.
You only have to look as far as Sebastien Haller, who struggled at West Ham and got his career back on track with the Dutch club before going on earlier this summer to make the switch to Dortmund.
