Mark Schwarzer and Thomas Sorensen have both named Guglielmo Vicario in their Premier League Team of the Season so far, admitting that they have been extremely impressed by the Italian.
While Hugo Lloris had been an outstanding servant for Tottenham over the years, the Frenchman has been well short of his best for the past two seasons, and Vicario has reminded Spurs fans of how it feels to have a reliable pair of hands between the sticks.
In fact, there are some similarities between the Italian and the younger version of Lloris, with the 27-year-old pulling off some outstanding reflex saves and also sweeping up impressively behind Spurs’ high defensive line.
The former Emploi man has also emerged as a real leader for the Lilywhites, often seen shouting instructions at his defenders and has proven to be extremely calm with the ball at his feet.
Guglielmo Vicario impresses at Spurs
Schwarzer and Sorensen both had Vicario in their Teams of the Season so far, with the former admitting that the current Spurs number one has proved him wrong.
Soensen told Optus Sport: “I think for me, it was between (Alisson) Becker and Vicario. First you look at like the eye test and I think they both passed it. And then the stats back it up as well. So you can pick either.
“I think they both deserve to be in there. I picked Vicario because, you know, it’s always difficult to come into a new league. We’ve seen how other goalkeepers have struggled.”
Schwarzer responded: “I’ve eaten my words already and I’m going to eat them again. I wasn’t sure about Vicario, but I put him in my team so far.”
