Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson has warned Cristian Romero to curb his tackling style or he could risk time on the sidelines.
Romero has been a revelation since moving to north London from Atalanta last summer with his no nonsense style of play having already made him a firm favourite with the supporters at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The Argentine was involved in a scissor tackle on Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu with his side leading 4-1 in the second half of the Premier League opener on Saturday.
The challenge went unpunished by referee Andre Marriner and was not received by VAR for further review, which left the central defender able to see out the rest of the match on the pitch leaving him eligible to take his place in the side to face Chelsea at the weekend.
Robinson has claimed that Romero can consider himself lucky not to have been sent off and gets ‘worse’ every time he watches a reply of the tackle.
“It’s not a great one,” Robinson told Football Insider.
“That style of challenge, Romero needs to be careful going forward.
“I think he mistimed it slightly and that is why he comes through with the other leg. He tries to bring his other leg around and it looks horrible. It did not look great.
“It is something going forward that he is going to have to be very, very careful of. The last thing Spurs need is him getting a straight red and getting a suspension.
“The more you look at it, the worse it gets. There is no easy way to describe it. It is not a good attempt at a tackle.
“The scissor movement is not something we want to see. You cannot dress it up.”
Our View
Romero is hot-headed and Antonio Conte has previously called for players not to make rash decisions, something that the Argentine needs to listen to without taking the sting out of his game.
A three-match suspension while 4-1 ahead and with Chelsea next up at Stamford Bridge would have been a disaster. Spurs fans will be keen to see just how far their side have closed the gap to Chelsea on Sunday when they meet in the Premier League with Romero set to play a key role in maintaining their 100% start to the campaign.
