Memphis Depay, who is a long-term target for Tottenham Hotspur, has held talks with Barcelona regarding his future, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano in his Caught Offside column.
Tottenham have been linked with a move for Depay with Managing Director of Football Fabio Paratici said a big fan of the winger. However, Romano has made it clear that they have not made any offers for the attacker so far, with Barca being willing to sell him on “very favourable terms”.
The Catalan giants have already communicated their stance to the Dutch international. However, they did convey that he is free to stay if he desires, as Xavi Hernandez is ready to keep him in their ranks. Although, they also warned him about the lack of minutes, especially after Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski’s arrivals.
It is claimed that Depay would decide on his future soon after assessing all the proposals that are on the table. Spurs will need to make their case soon enough if they do not want to lose out on his services in their attempt to bolster their attacking ranks.
“There have been talks in recent days where Barcelona have communicated to Memphis Depay that Xavi would count on him if he stayed, but he would have little space in the rotations because there are so many new signings,” Romano said.
“Barca would be ready to let Depay leave on very favourable terms. The decision will be made by the player, Memphis will choose based on the offers.
“There is no proposal yet from Tottenham so far despite so many rumours – Depay has always been appreciated by Spurs director Fabio Paratici, but no proposals have been submitted so far.”
Our View
We have already signed Richarlison from Everton for a fee of £60million (The Telegraph). His addition is a much-needed one as we have lacked a solid backup option for Harry Kane for quite a long time. However, we could use another signing for the frontline after Steven Bergwijn left to join Ajax for £26million (BBC).
That means Son Heung-Min is our only option on the left wing, with Antonio Conte having expressed his doubts over Bryan Gil’s suitability for the Premier League (Football.London). Ivan Perisic did join us on a free transfer from Inter Milan (ESPN), but he would probably be used as a left wing-back.
That is especially the case after Sergio Reguilon has been deemed surplus to requirements by Conte, having not selected him in the pre-season squad. Furthermore, Juventus are also planning to prise away Reguilon to solve their issues on the left-hand side of the backline (Calciomercato).
Hence, Depay would have a spot in our team, although it remains to be seen if we would place a bid or not. He is valued at €20million (£17 million) by the Blaugrana side (Sport), which is a bargain for a man of his talents indeed. However, we have to wait and see whether Conte’s team would make an offer for the former Manchester United man.
