Speaking in the pre-match press conference ahead of Tottenham’s clash against Chelsea, Spurs boss Antonio Conte has appeared to hint that Bryan Gil could remain at the club despite interest from overseas.

Gil was part of Tottenham’s match day squad for last weekend’s Premier League opener against Southampton in north London and ahead of the trip to Chelsea, he admitted that he is part of the 20-man squad.

It was reported by the print edition of Spanish newspaper AS (10/08/22) that the Tottenham winger was closing in on a move to Valencia and that talks had intensified for the Spanish club to take the Spaniard on loan yet again.

Gil spent the second half of last season out on loan at Valencia after Antonio Conte allowed the 21-year-old to leave in search of regular game time, just six months after joining the Lilywhites from Sevilla. (The Atheltic)

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claimed a few days ago that Valencia were not the only club interested in the Spaniard with Real Sociedad also looking at a deal to take the Spaniard to the Reale Arena.

Speaking at the press conference, Conte seemed to hint that with the exit of Steven Bergwijn to Ajax, Gil could be set to stay in N17 for the time being.

The Itailian told Football. London: “I’m very happy with our squad because compared to last season we improved, with Richy but we lost Bergwijn. Gil went on loan but now he’s in the squad of 20 players.”

Our View

If Gil is to remain with the first team squad means he is unlikely to get much play time unless Antonio Conte has a surprise up his sleeve. He is well down in the pecking order and has failed to catch the eye during his time in England.

Ideally, a return to his home country could help the Spaniard get his faltering career back on track. Conte seems to want to keep him if his words are to be believed but things could change between now and the end of the transfer window and we might see Gil go out on loan yet again
