Steven Bergwijn has revealed that he had been looking forward to completing his move to Ajax for the past 18 months.
The winger joined Spurs from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020 and had a dream start to life in north London when he scored a volley during his debut to secure a win over Manchester City.
Bergwijn found regular first team football hard to come by under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, having found himself mostly used as an impact player from the substitutes bench during his time in north London.
The Dutch international missed out on a move to Ajax during the January window and made headlines of his own when he scored two injury-time goals to help Spurs cap a remarkable comeback at Leicester City to win 3-2.
Earlier this month Bergwijn finally made his move to Ajax in a £26.4 million deal, having signed a five-year contract (Sky Sports) and revealed he was glad the uncertainty was over surrounding his future having admitted it was difficult to enjoy his holiday while both clubs were thrashing out the deal.
“I have been looking forward to this for a year and a half. I’m glad everything is over, and I’m rid of the uncertainty. Now I have peace in my head,” he told Dutch news outlet De Telegraaf.
“I had already dealt with Ajax about my contract, but then the clubs still had to come to an agreement. That was down to me. When you’re on holiday, you’re thinking about what will happen. I was away, but I couldn’t relax completely.
“Although I didn’t play enough at Tottenham Hotspur, he [Van Gaal] called me up for the important qualification matches against Montenegro and Norway, he let me play in Montenegro and I was in the starting line-up against the Norwegians.
“It’s just better if I play week in, week out. Physically it is difficult to play three matches a week at the World Cup if you have not made enough minutes at your club.”
Our View
Bergwijn’s heroics against Leicester in Spurs’ 3-2 win is a testament to his potential and talent. The Netherlands international never really got going in North London and it is good news for him that he is back in the Eredivisie.
There were clear indications that Bergwijn’s time at Spurs was coming to an end.
Bergwijn is still a raw talent and getting £26.4 million for him is ideal for Spurs. They have been proactive this summer and have been making significant additions to their ranks.
