Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has shared his prediction ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers this afternoon.
Merson however believes that it may be a long time before the Lilywhites are actually considered a top level team, having referred to their performance during the 2-2 draw against Chelsea last weekend as ‘papering over the cracks’.
Antonio Conte’s side required an injury time header from Harry Kane to rescue a point at Stamford Bridge in an ill-tempered clash that was not short of controversy.
Tottenham head into today’s fixture looking to return to winning ways against a Wolves side, who are still seeking their first victory of the new campaign.
Merson believes that Spurs will manage to edge out a 2-1 win against Wolves but he does not think that it will be a straightforward victory based on what he saw last week.
He told SportsKeeda: “A lot of people have said Tottenham Hotspur will be a different team this season, but I believe they still have a long way to go”
“They were lucky against Chelsea as Harry Kane’s late equaliser meant the result papered over the cracks as they were outplayed for large parts of the game.
“That said, I still think they’ll beat Wolves, but it won’t be a straightforward result based on what I saw from Spurs last weekend.
“With Kane, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski, they’ve got enough individual brilliance up front to unlock Wolves’ backline, so I’m going for a 2-1 Tottenham win.
“Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Wolves.”
Our View
Tottenham have set the bar very high for themselves with the kind of transfer window that they have had this summer and many people did not expect them to be the second-best team against Chelsea last weekend.
However, it is important to understand that Spurs are a work in progress. It could take some time for Antonio Conte to make this team a well-drilled unit but once that happens, I expect Tottenham to challenge for trophies and be the team to beat for many clubs this season.
