Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet is set to seal a loan move to Tottenham Hotspur after the player reportedly arrived at the Hotspur Way for his medical, according to the Daily Mail.
The announcement is expected to come before the team is scheduled to depart for the pre-season tour of South Korea tomorrow evening.
Lenglet has fallen out of favour at the Camp Nou with Barcelona coach Xavi said to have told the defender he does not form part of his plans for the upcoming season.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has made signing a left-footed centre-back a priority signing this summer and with the 27-year old defender’s arrival imminent, it seems that the club are doing everything they can to back the Italian. Although Conte’s first preference is reported to have been Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni, Frenchman Lenglet could prove to be a smart second option for the interim with the club possibly going back for Bastoni next summer.
Our View – the perfect move for all involved
Barcelona’s current financial predicament means they need to seal a few outgoings in order to accommodate the arrivals Andreas Christensen, Franck Kessie and other potential signings.
Finalising a loan-move to England could be the catalyst Lenglet needs to seal a spot in the France squad for the World Cup this year and prove to Barcelona that he deserves a place in their plans, with four years still to run on his contract with the club signed just 18 months ago.
With Antonio Conte preferring a back three of Eric Dier, Christian Romero and Ben Davies for most of the run-in at the back end of last season, Lenglet’s possible arrival could be the competition our defenders need to rise to the next level.
