Tottenham Hotspur are no closer to bringing Djed Spence to north London after the latest round of talks with Middlesbrough ended without an agreement being reached.

Sky Sports report that Tottenham and Middlesbrough remain with different opinions on the valuation of the England Under-21 international.

Spence is said to be keen to make the switch to join Antonio Conte’s side with the club also still keen on the right-wing back, however, as things stand he still remains with the Championship side.

The 21-year-old was sent out on loan to Nottingham Forest last season and made the most of his opportunity to win admirers with his performances helping Steve Cooper’s side promotion to the Premier League after being Huddersfield Town in the play-off final at Wembley.

Tottenham are reported to be ready to turn their attentions to other players who can operate in the same position if they reach an impasse with Boro, of which Torino’s Wilfried Singo and Jonathan Clauss of Lens are both potential alternatives.

Our View – Are Spurs slipping into old habits?

With Daniel Levy said to be leading talks while Fabio Paratici is in Italy, it will be concerning to some fans that the club could be perceived to be dragging themselves back into old habits by trying to over-negotiate a deal, only to miss out.

Antonio Conte wants the club’s business done as early as possible before pre-season, hopefully, we all aren’t set to be glued to Sky Sports News at one minute to midnight on transfer deadline day still hoping to sign the players the Italian desperately needs to turn us into genuine contenders for silverware.  We’ve been down that road before.
