Italian journalist Rudy Galetti has taken to social media to reveal that Newcastle United have begun work on trying to beat Tottenham Hotspur to the signing of Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips.
An exit from City looks inevitable for Phillips in January, with the midfielder having struggled for game time since his switch to the Etihad Stadium from Leeds United 18 months ago.
Over the past few weeks, several outlets have reported that the 27-year-old wants to leave in search of regular game time ahead of next summer’s Euros, with Tottenham said to be one of the clubs monitoring his situation (Football Transfers).
On November 17, 90 min claimed that the former Leeds man prefers joining the Magpies over Spurs since he is prioritising regular first-team football at his next club while Football.London’s Alasdair Gold also claimed a few days ago that the midfielder wants more game time than the Lilywhites are willing to promise.
Newcastle make first move for Kalvin Phillips
Galetti has now revealed on X that Eddie Howe’s men have now begun work on bringing the England international to St James’ Park in January.
The journalist says that the City star has emerged as Newcastle’s number one target, with the Premier League champions expected to accept a suitable offer for him.
He also adds that while Tottenham are keeping tabs on Phillips, he is not considered a priority transfer target by the North Londoners.
🚨 #Newcastle are taking the first steps to sign Kalvin #Phillips in Jan.
‼️ #NUFC consider the 🏴 player a main target: with a suitable offer, #ManCity could let him go.
🔎 #Tottenham are still monitoring him, but to date is not a priority: first of all, #THFC need a striker. https://t.co/NTZHSHN2BR pic.twitter.com/ZsODU87zwL

Spurs Musings Opinion
I think the most likely outcome in January is that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will stay put, which is why I do not expect Spurs to enter the market for a number six unless they pick up further injury issues. I believe Postecoglou will prioritise signing a centre-back and a versatile attacker, who can play on either flank.
