Tottenham Hotspur may have played an inadvertent role in Everton managing to sign Belgian midfielder Amadou Onana ahead of interest from West Ham United, according to iNews.

The Toffees completed the signing of the 20-year-old midfielder in a £33million deal from Lille yesterday (BBC), with West Ham reported to have also agreed a fee with the Ligue 1 outfit.

The report claims that Tottenham paid all of the £50million fee in advance to land Richarlison earlier this summer, rather than in installments which has given Everton the financial room to improve their squad during the current transfer window.

Everton’s financial problems have been well documented earlier this summer, and it was reported by The Mirror in June that the Merseysiders ran the risk of being sanctioned if they did not sell Richarlison by June 30 when the accounting year ends.

Frank Lampard’s side have now started to use the funds to improve their squad having landed the player who made 41 appearances across all competitions for Lille last season (transfermarkt).

Our View

Tottenham’s move for Richarlison saw the club bring in another much-needed striker to help provide cover for the likes of Harry Kane, something which has been well overdue over the past few seasons.

While West Ham missing out on a transfer target to a side who narrowly escaped relegation from the Premier League last season will humour Spurs fans, the reality is the club and supporters are looking upwards and focused on challenging for silverware.
