AC Milan are plotting to prise away Pape Matar Sarr from Tottenham Hotspur, having identified him as their top target to improve the midfield, according to the print edition of the Italian newspaper Tuttosport (04/08/22).
Milan are searching the market for midfield options, and they have now shifted their focus towards Matar Sarr having seen the likes of Carney Chukwuemeka (Daily Mail) and Renato Sanches (Fabrizio Romano), have joined Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, respectively.
The Serie A giants are keen to take the 19-year-old on a season-long loan deal with an option to make the deal permanent, since they have reservations over purely helping the teenager to develop without having the chance to sign him on a permanent basis while Spurs want a straight loan deal with no further clauses.
Our View
It would be best if Spurs reassess their stance on letting Matar Sarr leave even on a straight loan in the first place. After all, we are not blessed with options in midfield, considering how the likes of Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele, and Harry Winks no longer have a place in the team (Football.London).
The recent injuries to Oliver Skipp and Yves Bissouma have shown us how quickly things could get worse for us, especially during a long campaign. Hence, letting Matar Sarr leave on loan may not be a wise decision as he is the only other option who has garnered valuable experience playing first-team football at Metz last season.
Harvey White has recently been involved in and around the senior team set up at N17. However, unlike Matar Sarr, he has not consistently earned some experience at the very top, making it quite risky to depend on him in case of an emergency.
While Antonio Conte has only utilised a two-man midfield pairing so far, injuries and suspensions could significantly put our depth to the test, as is evident with the recent setbacks. Matar Sarr could be the solution to this issue as the 19-year-old has even made himself a full-fledged senior player for the Senegal national team.
Since Paratici is someone who recognised what Matar Sarr could bring to the table, perhaps it would be best to let him stay, especially since Conte would not have the ability to make five substitutions during matches, unlike the case in the previous season.
