Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on the transfer of Middlesbrough right wing-back Djed Spence.

90min report that Tottenham have made progress in their discussions with Boro and have always remained optimisitic of securing the services of the England Under-21 international, despite talks having taken place for the majority of June.

Spurs are now hopeful of wrapping up a deal ahead of the first of Antonio Conte’s players arriving back for pre-season training at the start of next week, which will begin with those who have not been involved in international fixtures over recent weeks.

The report claims that Spurs will shell out an upfront fee of around £15million to secure the services of Spence, who caught the eye during his season-long loan spell at Nottingham Forest last season.

Tottenham’s interest in Spence precedes his stint at the City Ground, with ESPN reporting back in July 2020 that Jose Mourinho was keen to bring him to N17 while he was in charge.

Our View – Goodbye Emerson

Spence’s impending arrival makes it hard to believe that Emerson Royal will still have a future at the club, with the Brazilian likely to head back to Spain whether on loan or a permanent basis.

Matt Doherty showed enough toward the end of last season prior to his injury at Villa Park that Conte’s expectations have clicked and was impressive in the right wing-back role.
