Tottenham and Leeds are both keen on 21-year-old Manchester United midfielder James Garner but neither club is willing to pay the £14 million asking price that the Red Devils have set for the academy graduate. (Sun)

Manchester Evening News claimed a few days ago that despite interest from Tottenham and several other Premier League clubs, it was Southampton who were leading the race to sign the young midfielder.

The Athletic reported earlier this week that Erik Ten Hag had decided the 21-year-old is surplus to requirements and Tottenham were one of the clubs eyeing a move for the youngster, along with Everton, Southampton and Leeds United. The Telegraph subsequently named Spurs and Nottingham Forest as the two frontrunners in the race for the midfielder’s signature.

Garner spent last season and a half out on loan at Nottingham Forest. The youngster helped Nottingham Forest win promotion to the top flight last campaign.

Our View

Garner is a young, 21-year-old midfielder who has shown promise during the time he has spent in the Championship. The reason he is leaving Old Trafford would be to get regular minutes but that is unlikely to happen at Spurs.

The midfield starlet will want to move to a club where he can be a key part of the team. In that sense, options like Nottingham Forest, Leeds or even Southampton will sound more enticing to the player as he can play a key role in those team. Despite Spurs’ interest, I don’t think this deal will happen.
