Tottenham Hotspur scouts have been left impressed by the performances of 22-year-old Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez, according to The Mirror.
The report claims that Ange Postecoglou wants to sign a striker in January and the Mexican could emerge as a realistic option for Spurs. However, it has also been revealed that Feyenoord have ‘little interest; in letting their prolific frontman depart halfway through the campaign.
Arne Slot’s team might not be replicating the heights they achieved last season, sitting ten points behind league leaders PSV but will continue to push and close the gap on the Eredivisie giants as they look to defend their title from. Understandably, they are not keen on selling.
On the subject of performances, Gimenez has been prolific for Feyenoord, scoring 20 goals and providing three assists in just 19 games so far this season (Transfermarkt). Such numbers undoubtedly catch the eye of top clubs in Europe.
Spurs have been linked with a move for the talented striker for quite some time now. L’Equipe recently revealed a few days ago that Arsenal are set to rival Tottenham for the 22-year-old’s signature.
More viable option than Ivan Toney
The Mirror report added that Postecoglou wants to sign a number nine in January and Ivan Toney was the chosen one. However, Brentford have no intention of letting the English international leave mid-season.
Hence, Spurs see Santiago Gimenez as a more viable option although they are aware of interest from Arsenal. It is said that Tottenham have ‘heavily scouted’ the Mexican international and are impressed with what they have seen.
Spurs Musings Opinion
Personally, I don’t see Feyenoord sanctioning a winter move for their star striker, no matter what the price. Just like Toney, the pursuit of Gimenez might hit a dead end too.
It must also be remembered that whilst the Mexican has been prolific in the Eredivisie, the Premier League is a totally different ball game and replicating such numbers here is no easy task. Toney, who has the experience might be our better bet. Regardless, both players are unlikely to move in January.
