Tottenham Hotspur are set to block the exits of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp in the January transfer window, according to Football Insider.
Until a few weeks ago, it looked like Hojbjerg’s time at Spurs was coming to an end in January. However, last Wednesday, The Telegraph reported that Spurs would not allow the Danish midfielder or Oliver Skipp to leave, in the aftermath of Rodrigo Betancur’s latest injury.
The report explained that with Bentancur set to be out of action, Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma set to leave for AFCON next month, Ange Postecoglou does not have the luxury to let either midfielder leave.
Following this, Italian publication Gazzetta Dello Sport revealed that Juventus have given up any hopes of signing Hojbjerg in the upcoming window and are fully aware that Spurs are unlikely to sanction an exit.
Spurs monitoring Kalvin Phillips’ situation at Man City
In addition to making the decision not be open to the prospect of moving either midfielder on, it has been revealed that Spurs are also keeping tabs on the situation of out-of-favour Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips.
Hojbjerg has played 14 times for Spurs this season across all competitions but only those of them have been starts (Transfermarkt). Skipp meanwhile has played 10 times, making just one start (Transfermarkt).
Spurs Musings Opinion
Tottenham simply cannot afford to let anyone leave in January. Even if we sign Phillips which I think we should, we must keep hold of Hojbjerg and Skipp, at least until the summer.
It is clear that Postecoglou does not fancy Hojbjerg but he still does a job whenever called upon as proven in the second half of the 3-3 draw at Manchester City.
Considering the injury issues we have had this season, we do not have the luxury to pick and choose. Spurs would be doing the right thing in blocking their exit in January.
