Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso has expressed his delight in returning to Villarreal after completing a season-long loan deal.

Lo Celso was among the four players including Tanguy Ndombele, Sergio Reguilon and Harry Winks cast aside by Antonio Conte and asked to find a new clubs since they do not feature in his plans for the season. (Fabrizio Romano)

The Argentina international joined Spurs in 2019 from Real Betis in a £55million, but failed to deliver any consistency with his performances to warrant his hefty price tag (Sky Sports).

Lo Celso spent the second half last season out on loan at the Yellow Submarine and was one of their most influential players under Unai Emery after the La Liga club made an unexpected run to the semi-final stage of the Champions League.

The midfielder admitted that the wait to return to Spain was longer than maybe he had anticipated but is now happy to be back at the club where he felt settled last saeason.

He told the official Villarreal website: “I am very happy to be here again. The wait went on a bit long, but it was worth it.”

“I went with the clear idea that I wanted to come back because it’s a club that I like for its philosophy, for the objectives they set and for how they welcomed me from the first day, making me feel as if I had already been here a for a long time.”

Our View

Giovani Lo Celso was not a bad player by any stretch of the imagination but failed to show the kind of dedication and consistency to play at a club of Tottenham’s stature which eventually saw him fall out.

Although Spurs would have loved to sell the player permanently, they will have to settle to a simple loan now and hopefully find buyers for him in January or during the next summer.
